The appearance of Fort Taylor at present is vastly different than that of the Civil War. The low walls seen here conceal Battery Osceola that had two 12-inch guns on barbette carriages, and Battery Adair, which had four 3-inch guns. Several other batteries were built on the Fort Taylor reservation, but most have been destroyed, and most of those remaining outside of Fort Taylor proper are not readily accessible (located in a Navy housing area, among other locations).
The 3-inch guns at Fort Taylor would have been generally similar in appearance to this gun still emplaced at Fort Monroe, Virginia. However the shield surrounding the gun would have been much less substantial than that present on this weapon, which was modified with a much larger shield during WW2.
The barracks that can be seen in this view were originally three story, but like the rest of the fort, they were cut down to one story when the Endicott gun batteries were installed. I do not have any good images of the Endicott batteries, as restrictions on where you can go (from a safety perspective) are significant. I suggest visiting some of my other pages to get a better feel for Endicott period fortifications.
